Good People

Blog shots-50Five weeks until I take off for Albania! Some days it seems waayyy too soon, but other days it’s not nearly soon enough. I’ve made a large dent in my shopping and packing, which has resulted in a large dent in my wallet too.

I’ve been experiencing various waves of anxiety and excitement–mostly excitement–as my departure date (March 18th) gets closer. I’ve been trying my best to stay focused on studying Albanian, keeping close tabs on how I spend my money and time, and preparing mentally for my experiences in the Peace Corps. I received some great advice (actually, I don’t really know if it could be classified as “advice,” but it’s something I will remember) from two women I respect: my mother and my Grandma Snow. Combined, these women have over 120 years of life experience. They have three college degrees, three missions, eight children, thirteen grandchildren (none of those grandchildren are my mom’s, as she frequently complains about :-p), and four great-grandchildren between them, not to mention the knowledge that only living and traveling all over the world can give a person. I can’t remember which of them said this quote verbatim, but they both supported its meaning:

“The most important thing that we can learn for ourselves and teach our children is that there are good people everywhere.”

I won’t lie and say that it has been easy for me to move back home after living, studying, and working independently for four years. During the past five months there were days where it felt like I was back in high school. But as soon as I gave it a little time, I was reminded that there are good people in Henderson/Las Vegas–both people I knew before I left and new people I’ve met here during my pre-Peace Corps hiatus. I’m grateful for the people who have been excited for me, encouraged me, and helped me prepare physically and mentally for this commitment.

And soon I’ll be looking forward, to the people I will meet in Albania and how they will change my life. My handbook describes Albanians as friendly, hospitable, and welcoming. Hopefully they will be accepting of this sarcastic American brunette! My mothers are absolutely right: There are good people everywhere, whether they live in southern Nevada or Oregon or Morrocco or Albania. I can’t wait to meet my fellow Volunteers, my host family, my students, and those in my community so I can fulfill the second and third goals of the Peace Corps, which really comes down to that same adage. I intend, as so many people have asked, to share with you the experiences I have with the people I will meet and work and play with, and I can only hope to adequately represent the good Americans I know to my future Albanian friends.

A call from the Assistant to the President

A call from the Assistant to the President

So as I was writing a few letters, listening to my Joseph smith commentaries by Marion G Romney, I got a call from Elder Salgado, one of the assistants to the President. He told me…

”Hey Elder Snow, how are you?” (All of this is in Spanish by the way)

”Good what’s up?”

”Well, just calling to see if you were awake.”

”-Fake laughing-”

”Hey, tell me about your district. Do you have any baptismal dates?”

”Yes! We have ten! 1 in Cerrito, 2 in Chinaca, and 7 in Calvario. They are each for the 16th, 10th and 23rd of February, their names are (etc etc etc)”

”Hey very good, it sounds like you are doing a very good job being district leader, however we need you to be a district leader in another location of the mission.”

”…….uh…”

”… I need you to be in Momostenango tomorrow at 1. You will be the district leader. See you there. Take care!”

And that was it. By tomorrow, I will be in the hardest zone in the mission. It is essentially scout camp. Hiking, not eating too much, weird showers that barely work, and possibly people speaking other languages. Actually the people there speak a language called Quiche. I think my Spanish is good enough to put a pause on it… Now I will be learning ancient Lamanite languages. How cool is that!

Wish me luck. I’m gonna need it. That being the case, I am super excited.

Remember 1 Nephi 3:7. I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded. For I know that the Lord giveth no commandment unto the children of men save he provideth a way for them that they may accomplish the thing that he commandeth them. (More or less) So! That being said… I’ll give it a try. Have a good week! Take it easy!

Hope for some progress

Elder SnowHey! Crazy go nuts week!

We finally got some hope for some progress, and got to meet some wonderful people. There is a family that I absolutely love that is very very VERY poor. They have a son in the mission, and he sends pictures to them via email. They give me the email address and I buy and print out the pictures for them so they can have some pictures of their missionary son (they don’t know that it costs money, I tell them that I am so good looking the photo guys give me the photos for free). And they LOVE it. One day, I was dropping off some photos, and someone from their family gave us a reference (someone that they know who we could teach, and who would be ready to hear the Gospel). Her name is Marleny, she is 10 years old and has been to church one time and LOVED it. Her parents are very busy workers and/or drunks, so she does not appreciate her situation very much, so she hangs around this family that I was visiting a lot. She likes the church, and Elder Ponce and I had the opportunity to teach her about the wonderful message of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her eyes just lit up, and she loved the message. She is 10, and is reading the Book of Mormon, and fulfilling commitments, and has sincere desires to be baptized. The only problem is parental permission. To be baptized, she needs to talk to her parents. We have been praying a lot, and plan to fast even more so that she might be able to carry out this ordinance. We are looking forward very much to her success, and future in the Gospel. I hope that everything goes well.

I got a call from President last Thursday, he felt inspired to call me and tell me that despite our difficulties in this area, he encouraged me to trust in the Lord, and for the hard work that I have done, to finally come to him, and put it in his hands. I will put this in practice in hopes that Marleny receives the ordinance of Baptism, so she might come closer to our Heavenly Father. Keep her in your prayers. We have high hopes for this week! I hope everyone is having a great winter! Take it easy!

The Week of the BUGS

Elder SnowQuick post for this week. This week was particularly weird. I have never seen freakier bugs in my whole mission than what we found this week. Here are some pictures!
They range from ticks that are the size of dimes, to Hercules beetles. I had a feeling Discovery Channel had a bug week or something, because I certainly did. The other ones, most of them I have never seen before. So enjoy! Have a great week!

Daaaaa End of the First Change.

Elder SnowI just wanted to upload 2 unforgetable moments that happened this week. Firstly I have attatched a picture of a stick bug. Yea… a stick bug. They exist… and one was waiting for me in front of our door one day. These things are creepy as heck… and are bigger than I thought!

Stick bug!

Stick bug!

Secondly, I have officially walked mile number 1,000 yesterday!!! Cool beans! 1,500 to go to get back to Las Vegas. Daaaa jkjk. Two fun facts for this week.

I hope everyone has a great week. Good luck with the cold!

Daaaaa New Year’s

Elder SnowPretty Interesting week. Many many fireworks… all over Huehuetenango. I have included a few pics.

In South America it is a tradition to burn a ”viejo” or a doll dressed up as an old man, to introduce the new year. We did the same since some Elders in our Zona are from Ecuador and Peru. A very special elder created the doll… and filled it with gas and fireworks… it was very interesting to watch. I have decided to not include photos of this event as my camera was not out to take photos of it. A bit too dangerous for me. Lemme just tell you that it was fun to watch =).

I have a very nice tailor in our ward, who got a hold of some Todos Santos Pants, and decided to make me some =). I have attached a picture of all of the fabric he had to use to make them =). I am a bit big for these people.

We went to a zipline for P day today! My first time! It was a blast. The best one was 700 meters long… and was about 500 ft high off the ground. It was a blast.

Last week of the change. I hope that things end well. I love you all. Take it easy this week!

I have walked 900 miles

Elder SnowHey! Christmas Blog Update!

First of all, for those of you who sent me letters in my Christmas package, THANK YOU! It was awesome to hear from all of you. I got some pretty cool stuff.

Firstly We had a Zone gift exchange (white elephant err something) I had a corte tie made for only 19 quetz, and it was pretty legit, and in return I got more Hand sanitizer. I do have quite a bit of hand sanitizer, so it was not well received unfortunately. Hey I’m not complaining, here in Huehue, it is nice to have Hand Sanitizer, but still… I mean… I gave a corte tie… Meh oh well. I will enjoy my clean hands for now I suppose.

We had a campfire and roasted marshmallows as well. It was pretty fun! But the best part was when my camera died. At 12 o’clock midnight, every single person in Huehuetenango set off at least one massive firework, and didn’t stop for 45 minutes! It was pretty dang legit. I have never seen a cheaper, but cooler firework show in my whole life. They say that the same thing happens again for new year, so hopefully my camera will have battery for tonight.

That was about it this week. Not much else to say, except for the fact that this week I will have walked 900 miles in my mission, I have completed 7 months in the mission, and I have attatched a picture of a leaf bug! Those things are real! And super tight. So enjoy. Other than that, not much. Happy New Year to everyone. I hope that everything goes well this week. Have fun!

There is something I need to learn

Elder SnowHey! Elder Rios emailed me! He is well… he has 6 weeks of physical therapy ahead of him. Luckily the problem was found, and he is on his way back to the mission in about 9 weeks.

So our ZL had divisions with us this week. The one who came with me has 15 months in the mission, and is one of the best missionaries I know. He taught me a LOT about the mission, and how to really get work done. He says that people work too hard, but not very intelligently. He is very VERY good at contacting, and taught me a lot. I realized with him, that I had not been working in the best way possible, but he did say that he was very impressed with me. He asked me, ”Why do you think you are not having baptisms in this area? Because I really don’t know. I look around, everything is clean, orderly, you made a giant map of your area all by yourself, you are obedient, you work hard, there is no reason why you shouldn’t have baptisms.” I told him that I didn’t know… but Elder Rios taught me that everything has a purpose, so I essentially just told him that there is something that I need to learn.

It was great to talk to you guys! Also thank you for your words about Grandma. They were very nice. They also really helped a lot. I felt like I was wasting my time out here, but now I feel like I am affecting more people than just those here in GUATEMALA!!!

Hey it was great to talk to you again =) I hope that your week goes well. I pray for you guys. Take it easy. I love you! =)

Just do it

CherylHappy New Year everyone. This year, I have watched people in my family essentially do what this young lady did–take that first step and be glad she did. Congratulations to her! Congratulations also to Jacob for making the leap to his new job, and to Aaron for marching boldly into the jungles of Guatemala. As I watch Kathryn and Ethan, poised at the top of the hill, I know they’ll be glad to take the leap when it comes time.
